Dynamic DNA 5.3.2013
WHAT IS DNA?
1. The DNA is found in the nucleus.
2. Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid
3. The DNA molecule comes in the form of a twisted ladder and scientists call its shape a "Double Helix"
4. The MIDDLE of the DNA MOLECULE is made of bases. These bases will only pair up with a particular way:
6. G stands for guanine.
A stands for adenine
T stands for thymine.
C stands for cytosine.
WHAT IS A GENE?
1. Genes are instruction manuals for our bodies.
2. Genes are made of DNA.
3. A gene or protein called "hemoglobin" is responsible for our red blood cells to carry oxygen.
4. If our gene is normal, the hemoglobin protein will work fine. But if the instructions in the gene are changed, or mutated, changes in the hemoglobin could result in the disorder sickle cell anemia.
5. It is true that your DNA or GENES are responsible for you EYE COLOR.
WHAT IS A CHROMOSOME?
1. If you pulled your DNA from one of your cells, it would be 3 meters long. About as long as a car.
2. The DNA fits because it is packaged into compact units called "chromosomes"
3. Chromosomes are storage units for DNA.
4. It is true that different organisms have a different number of chromosomes inside each cell.
5. Each human cell has 46 chromosomes.
6. You recieved 23 chromosomes from your mom and 23 from your dad.
7. Males have x and y chromosomes. Females have two x chromosomes.
8. A mosquito has 6 chromosomes.
An onion has 16 chromosomes.
A carp has 104 chromosomes.
DNA REPLICATION:
1. DNA, a molecule that holds genetic information, makes an exact copy of itself whenever a cell divides.
2. The nucleus is where i am located.
3. The first step of SNA is to unzip.
4. It unwinds from spools made of protein.
5. A always geos with T.
C always fors with G.
