human impact/dependence on ocean
- There are 4 different types of human interaction. Positive unintentional, positive intentional, negative unintentional, and negative intentional.
- We use the ocean for food.
- Oceans also help with import and export trade, and ships are accounted for more than 98% global trade.
- We can help the ocean by using recreation, instead of ruining the ocean.
- Just have fun, and don't affect the ocean much, and also keep it safe.
- Oceans can help with salt.
overfishing
- There is supposed to be a certain amount of fishing that you have to do.
- If you fish too much, the population will decrease and that wouldn’t be good.
- It affects the people as well, since some people live off the oceans. Some live in port towns, and might also live on boats.
- Aggressive Fishing Association is trying to limit the amount of fishing.
- Using nets isn't good, since they get way too many fish.
- Many people plant traps and that wouldn’t be good either.
runoffs
- Runoff - water from rain, or other sources that picks up pullutants such as chemicals or oils, and leads it to the ocean.
- Only one quart of oil can pollute about 3 acres.
- Construction sites can harm as well. Chemicals can run off from area can get into the ocean.
- Most of the pollution comes form land based sources.
- To prevent it, we can fix leaks in our cars. Chemicals that we use for our house can affect as well.
dead zones
- An area in the ocean with low levels of oxygen. Could be from hurricanes and large amounts of rain, or pollution from run offs.
- So low that not many life forms live there. Can also be cause by phytoplanton. Happens int he gulf of mexico
artificial reefs
- An artificial reef is a man-made reef that's put into the ocean.
- Usually made out of steel. Some arent on purpose, but most are.
- Affect population of fish, when they surround on the reef, and fishermen get to them for fishing.
- Are located closer to the coast, where its easier to fish.
- Poisonous chemicals can affect the animals, which is harmful. if you overfish, it could be bad.
Oil Spills:
- An oil spill is an accidental release of oil into a body of water.
- Can effect in its ecosystem. or the ecosystem that it's in. Can be caused because of leaking ships or land oil spills that go into the ocean.
- It affects fish and plants, and any other organisms in the ocean ecosystem that comes in contact with the oil Doesn't kill, but can contaminate.
- The humans are the main cause of oil spills, we are drilling fort he oil, and exporting it on ships. Mostly are not on purpose. Some can be purposeful.
Climate Change:
- THings like global warming, and glaciers melting. With this, the oceans could get cooler, and will also cause the sea level to rise.
- In a way, the ocean is heating up, and is causing the glaciers to melt..
- It could also be pollution, with carbon dioxide. IT affects all of the organisms living in the sea, by not letting them adapt. The fish wont be able to adapt to cool water, and will die out.
